JSE-listed Grindrod has appointed Cheryl Carolus as a nonexecutive director with effect from October 1.

She will also succeed Mike Hankinson, who is retiring, as chairperson with effect from May 25, 2022.

Carolus, who is also chairperson of gold miner Gold Fields, has previously served on the boards of various listed companies, including that of diamond miner De Beers, financial services provider Investec and airline South African Airways.

She also has a long history of serving on the boards of nonprofit organisations such as the International Crisis Group, Soul City, World Wide Fund for Nature, the British Museum, and the South African Constitution Hill Education Trust and was South Africa’s High Commissioner to the UK from 2001 to 2004.

Carolus was awarded an honorary doctorate in law from the University of Cape Town for her contribution to freedom and human rights and the French National Order of Merit by the government of France.

“On behalf of the Grindrod board, I’d like to extend a warm welcome to Cheryl. We look forward to her invaluable contribution and leadership,” Hankinson comments.

The Grindrod board extends its appreciation to Hankinson for "his steady stewardship and unwavering contribution and service during his 12-year tenure as director and seven years as chair of the company".
